Nursing - Why do we remain in a career dominated by unpleasant realities?

Do you remember your first love? How about your first kiss? Ah! The nostalgia of times past. What about the first time you suctioned a trach or inserted an NG tube? Yeah, well… so much for nostalgia.

As a nurse, you have garnered a number of first time memories, the majority of which are not pleasurable. If this is true then why do you remain in a career dominated by unpleasant realities?

Welcome to the Nursing Jobs Web Blog! My name is Jordan Michaels. I am a registered nurse with many years of professional practice and experience. My background includes critical care, home health, utilization review, behavioral health, and hospital accreditation. Positions I have held include staff nurse, program director, and employee educator. Throughout my career, I have been the proud recipient of several commendations.

My purpose is to write to you about the many facets of the nursing profession and the vast realities associated with being a care provider. I want us to explore our unique and collective motivations for being what we are and doing what we do. Together, we will have our nostalgia!

Unpleasant realities isnt how I would describe the world of nursing. How can you say that giving a patient the ability to breath better by cleaning a trach or being able to provide nutrition through an NG tube are unpleasant? It is a very rewarding career and much like any first love you must work at keeping the relationship exciting. Sometimes it requires a change of scenery as do many jobs. The fortunate part of nursing is that there are so many places that nursing can take you. So the excitment of starting an IV for the first time, trach care, putting in your first catheter doesnt have to become a task you dont really love to do anymore you can just do other things insurance physicals, school nurse, hospital, long term care, consultant and the list just goes on. You dont lose your first love; you just take your first love whereever you go.
